Lots of yelling is expected as Goku and Vegeta look to defeat Broly in the new Dragon Ball Super: Broly!!!!!

On January 16, 2019, the Legendary Super Saiyan returns to the series Dragon Ball Super: Broly, the 20th film in the franchise and the 1st from the Dragon Ball Super series. Broly originally debuted in the film Broly- The Legendary Super Saiyan, the first in a trilogy of non-canon movies starring fan favorite antagonist Broly. This new movie will offer a different take on the Legendary Super Saiyan, being written by series creator Akira Toriyama.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly follows the events of the hit anime series “Dragon Ball Super,” the first new Dragon Ball storyline from original creator Akira Toriyama in more than 18 years. Since premiering in Summer 2015, Dragon Ball Super has propelled the popularity of the franchise globally – with both lifelong fans and a new generation of children and teens. The last Dragon Ball film, “Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’” (2015), was a box office hit – grossing $8M in North America to become the first independent film to make the Top 10 list of highest grossing anime films domestically.

Now there’s a lot to talk about from this trailer alone. This trailer takes place almost entirely in the past, showing off how Frieza first began his reign of planet Vegeta, home of the three Saiyans and that will be the focus of the movie. Goku, Vegeta, and Broly were born around the same time, with the trailer also focusing on their respective fathers, Bardock, King Vegeta, and Paragus.

The scene with Paragus rushing off to save his son is very similar to a scene in Broly- The Legendary Super Saiyan, with one key difference. In the original movie, King Vegeta straight up ordered the execution of baby Broly, fearful of his immense power shown from birth, while in the new movie King Vegeta instead opts to exile the newborn Saiyan to a remote planet somewhere in the universe.

From here on out, everything in the trailer is based directly on the manga “Dragon Ball Minus,” including a scene where Bardock and his wife Gene send their son Kakarot; AKA Goku; away to planet Earth before Frieza can wipe out the planet. A young Vegeta is shown standing over the corpse of some poor alien, while Broly looks up to the sky as he eats a massive egg on the planet he was exiled to. The next scene shows off Frieza’s cruelty as he throws a massive energy blast into the planet Vegeta, instantly destroying it and killing every Saiyan on the planet.

Other fun tidbits throughout the trailer are Power Ranger ripoffs “The Ginyu Force” striking their poses like the dorky villains they are, Frieza appearing without his armor for the first time, Frieza’s father King Cold appearing to declare his son ruler of the planet, and finally a tease at what the fight between Goku, Vegeta, and Broly will look like.

So far it seems like the movie will be very similar to Broly’s original movie, however with Akira Toriyama at the helm, it’s impossible to know what the movie will look like in the end.

But wait, there’s more! This November, the movies Dragon Ball Z: Bardock – The Father of Goku (1990) and Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn (1995) will finally be coming to North American theatres. On November 3rd and November 5th, you can finally enjoy the double feature on the big screen with remastered sound and visuals, in full English dub. You can go look at Fathom Events’ page for ticket sales and theatre info; if you buy a ticket you also get an trading card from Bandai’s Dragon Ball Super card game exclusive for this event, while supplies last.

I know one thing, I’m definitely looking forward to how Goku and Vegeta will defeat Broly, knowing Dragon Ball Super it’s probably going to involve lots of yelling.
