He also whispers about his forthcoming album, and the pair talk about his experience as a creative in the music business, and how he got on SZA’s SOS album.

Don Toliver tells Apple Music’s Zane Lowe about the origin of his new song “4 Me” featuring girlfriend Kali Uchis…

The story of this song is… It’s the feeling of just me wanting to have fun, me wanting to really have a moment with my girl. I felt like “Drugs N Hella Melodies” was the last one we did together. I wanted to get back in that pocket. But I wanted to be more fun this time. I wanted us to dance. I wanted us to really live in the moment. This is just one of my all-time favorite songs, period. I just thought me and her doing this together has just been dope.

It’s amazing, man. This song with my girl is so crazy. It’s one of my favorite songs on the whole album. A lot of people that I played this song for love this song. My girl loves this song. It just feels good to be out and to know that the album is on the horizon. It’s just even more special.

Don Toliver on listening to the original song, “Girls Dem Sugar” featuring Mya and Beenie Man when he was younger…

I’m 100% inspired by the original song. Honestly, when I was in high school, I picked up on a lot of songs that I would always hear when I would go to school in the morning. It’d come on MTV AMTV. I’ve forever been a fan of Neptunes as well. This is just a full-circle moment for me. It was really crazy. Wheezy sent me an Instagram story with the song on it. I was just like, “Yo, let’s make this a beat.”

Don Toliver on his outlook for this coming year and what he’s excited about…

Man, the year looks amazing. I’m releasing music here. I have a lot of tricks up my sleeve. I feel like Friday I have a crazy, crazy announcement. One of the biggest announcements I ever made in my life.

Don Toliver on his experience as a creative within the music industry…

It’s been a lot of information. It’s been a very crazy learning process. Me being in this industry and me working the way I work, I’m very to myself about a lot of things. Music is one of the most things where I have to really lock in with people and really collaborate with producers, other artists, and things of that nature. It’s been interesting. I’ll tell you that much.

Don Toliver on working with SZA for her album ‘SOS’…

To be honest, the song was in a pack for a little bit. It was just one of those things where I’m like, “Whenever she drops her album, I’m pretty sure she would’ve put that song on there.” When I got the call that she was actually using it, I was just beyond excited, man. That album is beyond amazing. For me to be a part of it was just crazy, man. Big, big shout-out to SZA for that.
