De La Soul Perseveres Despite Dave’s Heath Issues In “Royalty Capes” Video

Legendary hip hop trio De La Soul returns with the latest video from their Grammy-nominated album And The Anonymous Nobody….

The song “Royalty Capes,” featuring Gina Loring is the latest single from the album to get a video treatment and begins with Dave revealing his medical struggles with congestive heart failure and having to wear a life vest in case of an emergency.

“I’m ready just to get back to the stage,” Dave says in the music video. “I miss that. I love traveling. I love being around my guys. I want that back.”

Directed by J Anders Urmacher, who also worked with De La Soul on “Drawn,” the video is an ode to De La Soul’s perseverance as it follows the trio across their world tour.

Shot in beautiful locations around Nice and Sete in France; Rotterdam, Holland; Toronto, Canada; London, England; and Los Angeles and New York City in the United States, the bands live intensity and passion is on full display.

“Royalty Capes” is the latest video from De La Soul’s groundbreaking album And The Anonymous Nobody…, their first album in eleven years. Using a revolutionary strategy of crowdfunding, De La Soul crafted a triumphant return and merged their longstanding fans with a new generation of hip hop lovers. The “Royalty Capes” video displays the large reach of De La Soul’s audience, paying tribute to their live shows and tour life.

“Royalty Capes,” produced by Dave aka Plug Too and mixed by Bob Power, was one of the first songs recorded during early jam sessions for and the Anonymous Nobody. Recording started at The Bomb Shelter and perfected at historic Vox Studios, NYC with an unorthodox 9 bar loop of saxophone slowed down and reconstituted for Pos and Dave.
