Trump has an idealogical border war surfacing in Mexico with the election of Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Amidst a chaotic past few months north of the border, with a wall going up slab by slab and with the ongoing ICE crisis, Mexico has elected a new president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who has vowed to be tough on Trump.
While that all sounds good and well, we are going to have to see how this pans out as Trump has consistently said that Mexico will pay for the wall and there are still children missing their families along the border in detainee camps. Lets not forget about the tariffs he is imposing on foreign products and trade war we are facing today.
The irony of President López Obrador’s recent election is that he is somewhat of a populist leader himself, and he has vowed to crack down on big business and the wealthy elite in hopes of providing for the poor in a Robin Hood-esque manner.
According to NPR, “critics long have warned he is a leftist firebrand who will spell big trouble for Latin America’s second-largest economy, with Venezuela-style socialist policies.”
Anyone else remember all the statements that the late Hugo Chavez, President of Venezuela, made about America? Here’s a reminder:
“The government of the United States doesn’t want peace. It wants to exploit its system of exploitation, of pillage, of hegemony through war. It wants peace, but what’s happening in Iraq? What happened in Lebanon? Palestine? What’s happening? What’s happened over the last hundred years in Latin America and in the world?”
Was Chavez wrong? This is one quote and whether you agree or don’t, this will be a situation to watch. NAFTA is on the fringes and with Trump having to take on a socialist leaning President amidst all the drama of ICE and the border wall, where will this go?
If López Obrador is going to be coming down hard on the elites in his country, do you think he will be likely to appease the elite of the United State by paying for a border wall? After all he also came out with a book called “Oye Trump” aka “Listen Up Trump”. Their conversation was said to be “respectful” but that doesn’t sound like it was great. There’s a lot of other terms that could have been used, but “respectful” was all we got. Watch this situation….
Recibí llamada de Donald Trump y conversamos durante media hora. Le propuse explorar un acuerdo integral; de proyectos de desarrollo que generen empleos en México, y con ello, reducir la migración y mejorar la seguridad. Hubo trato respetuoso y dialogarán nuestros representantes.
