Some artists over do it and some find ways to slip in just what’s needed to make the track everything that it could be. That minimalist approach by the Villagers on their new single “A Trick of the Light” gives us just what we need in the early part of the Summer. Just enough lyrics and music to make this song truly have the replay value. There are so many nuances in this song that make you have to run it back and you can tell they did a great mix on the this, the levels on the guitar are perfect. As for the visual it’s def akin to one of the 90’s rock music videos where you’re like, “What the f**k was that?” Funny thing is the director and artist were going for just that.
The video for ‘A Trick of the Light’, the first single from the album, was directed by Bob Gallagher. Conor says of the collaboration: “Myself and Bob got together and discussed the song thematically and came to the conclusion that there was no other option but to make a short film in which we follow a disheveled shamanistic protagonist who mysteriously triggers an altered state of consciousness in everyone he meets, or at least believes that he does. We also wanted lots of dancing and to inspire a general feeling of “what the hell did I just watch?” in the viewer.”
Villagers’ song ‘Nothing Arrived’ was recently featured in the HBO drama Big ‘Little Lies’ and Conor’s cover of Elvis Presley’s ‘Wonder Of You’ in the season finale. Villagers’ Spotify session version of Awayland track ‘Nothing Arrived’ has hit over 100 million streams.
